Cadet Training
Two of our senior Cadets recently attended a weekend NCOs course at RAF Cottesmore in order to enhance their skills and enable them to be more effective leaders. The course covered leadership, presentation skills, team-working, confidence and discipline. It also covered drill and adventure training. They were given various tasks to accomplish over the weekend and at the end of the course had to complete an exam and give a presentation to staff. This is just one of the many training courses that the Air Cadets provides for its Cadets and Staff and the skills gained not only benefit the Air Training Corps but are also attractive to future employers.
Nijmegen Success
Senior Cadet Flt Sgt Redwood recently received a medal for completing the gruelling Nijmegen march in Holland. Flt Sgt Redwood Travelled by air and train to meet up with around 18 other Cadets from all over the UK at base camp, the Human Sword army camp in Holland. The march was over 4 days at 40 kilometres each day in intense heat, carrying packs that weighed around 10-15Kg! Each of the 4 circular walks started at around 4am and finished at around 2pm to avoid too much exposure to the heat. To illustrate the difficulty level, 40,000 started the march and an estimated 3,500 did not finish.
Shawbury Camp
4 Cadets and a member of staff from our Squadron, along with many cadets from other Squadrons, attended a week long camp at RAF Shawbury, the home of the Defence Helicopter Flying School, the Central Flying School (Helicopter) Squadron and the Central Air Traffic Control School. Over the week the Cadets were involved with all sorts of exciting activities, including flying and shooting. They had a visit by RAF careers, found time to go bowling and do laser quest. They used RAF helicopter flight simulators and did high ropes exercises that found them balancing on top of a 15 metre platform high up in one of the hangars! Perhaps the most exciting part was a flight in a ‘Squirrel’ training helicopter. They were dined in the Sergeants Mess each night and went to bed exhausted! This is just one of the many exciting camps that our Cadets have the opportunity to go on throughout the year.

Afghanistan Talk From ex-Cadet
Lance Corporal Andrew Beardsley, an ex-Cadet of 2425 Squadron, visited our headquarters to give a talk on his Army career to current cadets.
LCpl Beardsley left 2425 Squadron in February 07. He had been a cadet for 4 years, just under a year of that was spent with 2425 Squadron.
He had always wanted to join one of the services and the RAF was his first choice but when it became clear that he might have to wait a while he turned his attentions to the Army.
During his basic training he won Best Recruit award. Following his trade training he was eventually posted to 14 Signal Regiment and subsequently deployed on various operations, including various locations in Afghanistan.
During his talk he described the equipment and methods used in his role as an electronic warfare specialist to a packed hall full of enthralled Cadets. He even brought along some items of clothing and equipment for Cadets to see and try on first hand.
He told Cadets how appreciative he was of his ATC background which helped him all the way through his Army career and told the Cadets that the experiences they receive with the ATC will benefit them whatever they do in the future.
During his visit he also met up with some old friends that were also cadets in 2425 Squadron during the time he was there.
We wish him all the best for the future and hope that he will visit again.

Air Cadets of 2425 (Nottingham Airport) Squadron held their prestigious annual Presentation Evening awards ceremony at the end of January and were honoured to have amongst their guests Rushcliffe Borough Councillor Debbie Mason and Maggie Falconer of When You Wish Upon A Star, the charity for sick children.
In total 140 people enjoyed the formal evening held in the plush surroundings of the Belgrave Rooms in Nottingham city centre. The event started with a 3 course dinner, followed by presentations to the Cadets who received the awards and promotions that they had worked hard to attain over the past 12 months.
During the awards speeches were given by dignitaries from the Air Training Corps, including Wing Commander Dickinson and Squadron Leader Wilson, as well as honoured guests.
Amongst the many awards, three of the older Cadets gained honourable mention for attaining their gliding 'wings', awarded for completing a training course that culminated in them flying solo in Air Cadet gliders.
Councillor Mason said “I feel honoured to be invited to this event at which I have learned so much about what these young Air Cadets do. I didn't realise that there was so much more to it than flying. I am especially impressed at the amount of money raised for charities like When You Wish Upon A Star.”
Maggie Falconer expressed her gratitude to the Squadron for the £1,295.00 raised for When You Wish Upon A Star, the local charity that makes dreams come true for sick children. Maggie read out an emotional thank-you email from the parents of one sick child who was able to visit Santa in Lapland, funded by the money raised by the Cadets.
In total over the last year the Squadron raised over £3200 for charities. Flt Lt Frost, in charge of the Squadron said “I am so proud of the Cadets who have worked so hard throughout the year to raise money. I think it is a fantastic achievement”
The Squadron were pleased to receive a substantial donation to their funds from Colin Fox representing the committee of Rempstone Steam and Country Fair. Colin expressed his gratitude to the Squadron for their hard work parking the hundreds of cars that visit the event.
Guests were also shown a video of the Squadron's activities during the year such as flying, camps, visits to RAF bases, route marches, sports events, target shooting and much more.
The night ended with the Cadets looking and feeling like film stars when they lined up on the stage for guests to take photographs as a memento of a great night.

The church plays an active part in the community with Family Praise on the first Sunday of each month. Children are particularly welcomed at this service, which is short and informal.
Holy Communion is held on the second and fourth Sundays.
Family Services are held on the third and fifth Sundays.

Gradbach Camp
Once again our Cadets thoroughly enjoyed their annual excursion to Gradbach, near Flash, in Staffordshire, the highest village in England. We stayed at a large farmhouse owned by the Scouts which can accommodate all 12 staff and 30 Cadets. The weekend began on the Friday night with a convoy of mini-buses and cars making their way along the A50. Cadets soon settled in and enjoyed their burgers before settling down for bed. Saturday was the busiest day starting with a 6K walk in the hills which enabled the cadets to hone their map-reading skills as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme training. They soon learned how variable weather conditions can be in that sort of area and how difficult it can be to track their location on a map. Afterwards in the afternoon Cadets did some team building work. Then at night, after dinner, they did a 2 hour night exercise outside where they were given a scenario which involved a certain amount of field craft, retrieving top secret items lost from a ‘crashed aircraft’, without being caught by the staff. At 9.30pm just as the sleet started to fall Cadets returned to base to have their hot soup. Before bed they performed some light hearted sketches which made fun of Staff and fellow Cadets in a good-natured way. Over the weekend in between all of the activities Cadets were fed by delicious food prepared by Staff and Committee members. This included a full Sunday roast! Cadets understandably returned home tired, well-fed and happy on the Sunday.
Cross Country Success
Cadets from our Squadron competed in Wing Cross Country recently in Melton. This is where several hundred Cadets from the 29 Squadrons that form the ‘Wing’ compete in different age groups. Our Squadron came a very creditable 7th out of 29 Squadrons in the Wing. Well done to those Cadets that took part.
Christmas Disco
As this article is being written we are about to have our Christmas Disco to bring to an end another busy year. So, depending on when you read this, have a Merry Christmas and/or a Happy New Year from 2425 Squadron!
